2017 Audi A5 Cabriolet – Convertible
In March 2017, the new Audi A5 Cabriolet will be launched at prices starting at $48,600. Reason enough to take a look at the highlights and equipment, but also the engine, the technical data and the driving performance, to see what the new generation of the open mid-range model has in it.
Design: This is the perfect wave
When designing the 2017 Audi A5 Cabriolet, the designers were inspired by the slender lines of the coupé. The front is dominated by a three-dimensional radiator grille that is significantly flatter and wider than before. The strong curves over the wheel arches, which are shaped like a shaft, are particularly accentuated, while horizontal lines at the rear emphasize the width of the new Audi A5 Cabriolet. The rear window is also flatter and emphasizes the sporty appearance, as well as the short overhangs and the long, heavily contoured bonnet.
The classic soft top is designed to impress with a perfect fit and offers excellent aerodynamic performance thanks to effective insulation. The new comfort opening facilitates the operation of the standard acoustic roofing: Now a short pull on the switch is sufficient to open the softtop fully automatically in 15 seconds or close in 18 seconds – even during the journey up to 50 km / h.
The third brake light was integrated into the circulating trim of the convertible top cover. Likewise on board: “Xenon plus” headlights with a cool lighting graphics are series. Audi also offers LED spotlights and matrix LED spotlights. In the case of the latter, the system can individually switch the LED off and on as required, or additionally dimmed in 64 steps each to illuminate the street in the same way as daylight, without dazzling other traffic users.
In order to give the Audi A5 Cabrio its own character, Audi offers various equipment lines. The “design” package sets elegant accents, including the single-frame grill in titanium black with slats in chrome and further differentiations in the interior. The “Sport” line focuses on a dynamic center of gravity, for example with the chrome tailpipes, the diffuser painted in car paint or the optional “S Line” sports package.
Trunk: It even lowers itself automatically
When the convertible top is closed, the luggage compartment has a capacity of 380 liters. The convertible top tub in the trunk travels downwards automatically when the soft top is opened and when the top is closed again. This means that the largest possible loader space is available at all times. The rear seat is split in the ratio 50:50 and can be easily folded over from the trunk. On request, Audi provides a gesture control for the luggage compartment flap: An approximation sensor in the bumper reacts to a kick movement with the foot – the flap opens automatically when the optional comfort key has been detected.
Engines: Sensibly powerful – so fast and so economical is the convertible
Three engines are available for the new Audi A5 Cabriolet: a 2.0 TFSI with 252 hp, a 2.0 TDI with 190 hp and a 3.0 TDI with 218 hp. After the market launch, a 2.0 TFSI with 190 hp and a 3.0 TDI with 286 hp will follow. Compared to the previous model, the engines show a performance increase of up to 17 percent, while their consumption has declined by up to 22 percent.
Audi A5 Cabriolet 2.0 TFSI quattro (252 hp): The 2.0-liter turbo benziner generates 252 hp at 5,000 to 6,000 rpm. The maximum torque of 370 Nm is available between 1,600 and 4,500 rpm. Equipped with all-wheel drive and the “7-speed S-Tronic” (dual clutch transmission), this Audi A5 convertible does the classic sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h. On the other hand, an average fuel consumption of 6.3 to 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 144 to 151 g / km.
Audi A5 Cabriolet 2.0 TDI (190 hp): As the smallest diesel, the Audi A5 Cabriolet has a 2.0-liter engine with 190 bhp from 3,800 to 4,200 tours. The impressive maximum torque of 400 Nm is available between 1,750 and 3,000 tours. The power transmission is via the “7-speed S-Tronic” to the front wheels. Equipped as such, the Audi A5 Cabriolet with the “S Tronic” spins from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.3 seconds and achieves a top speed of 232 km / h. Audi’s combined fuel consumption is 4.5 to 4.7 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (CO2 emissions 118 to 124 g / km).
Audi A5 Convertible 3.0 TDI quattro (218 hp): The 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel combines high efficiency with sporty power development and high running culture. The six-cylinder turbodiesel generates 218 hp at 4,000 to 5,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm between 1,250 and 3,750 tours. With the “7-speed S-Tronic” and all-wheel drive the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds. The propulsion ends at 241 km / h. The average consumption, according to Audi, amounts to 4.9 to 5.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 128 to 137 grams per kilometer.
Chassis: Powerful package for added dynamism
The wide track and the long wheelbase form one of the foundations for the sporty-balanced chassis tuning. A further developed five-axis linkage is used on the front axle. In the rear, a five-bar design replaces the trapezoidal steering axle of the predecessor model. As an option, Audi offers a chassis with damper control, which allows the driver to adjust the basic characteristics in several steps via the “Dynamic Drive Select” driving dynamics system and optionally provide a particularly dynamic or comfortable driving experience.
Electromechanical, directly translated and spontaneously appealing servo steering is also a new development, which follows the current speed and conveys a high-precision feedback from the road, so that the Audi A5 Cabriolet agilates through narrow curves. Optionally, there is the dynamic steering, which varies according to the speed and the steering angle, and which changes dynamically on the pushing pressure from strong comfort to dynamic.
Lighter and more stiff: now the fun begins
Audi was able to increase the already good torsional stiffness of the predecessor model by a further 40 percent. This benefits the agile driving behavior of the convertible. The total weight of the new generation sinks by up to 40 kilograms. Thus the front-mounted A5 convertible with the 190 HP strong 2.0 TDI weighs 1,690 kilograms. Additional struts in the car body opposite the coupé and reinforced sills compensate for the elimination of the fixed roof. In a crash with overhead, head-thorax side airbags and automatically extending aluminum profiles provide the safety of the occupants.
Interior: Even finer and fully digital
The interior offers a high processing quality. Pleasant soft-touch surfaces and leather are used extensively, while aluminum applications accentuate the sportiness. If desired, an ambiance lighting with 30 adjustable colors can be used to match the interior.
Thanks to the fundamental new operating and display concept, including natural voice control and free-range search, the driver can control all functions effortlessly and intuitively. Standard belting microphones for driver and passenger improve the voice quality even when the convertible top is open.
As an alternative to analogue analogue instruments, there is the full-scale “Audi Virtual Cockpit” with different display options, the large TFT screen with 12.3 inch or 31.2 centimeters screen diagonal provides detailed graphics thanks to high resolution, the optional head-up display projected All relevant information as quickly detectable symbols and digits on the windshield in the direct field of view of the driver.
Infotainment: Free high-speed internet on board
The “MMI Navigation plus with MMI Touch”, whose 8.3-inch monitor (21.1 cm in diameter) has a resolution of 1,024 x 480 pixels, is at the forefront of the infotainment offering. In addition to a DVD drive and a 10-GB flash memory, the high-end system also includes two card readers, an AUX-in and a USB port with charging function.
An LTE module brings the online services of “AudiConnect” on board – free of charge for three years in Germany as well as in most European countries, since it is automatically adjusted to the respective country provider if necessary. Also free of charge are the first five map updates for the navigation system. In addition, the media center has a WLAN hotspot that connects the passengers’ mobile devices to the Internet.
The “Smartphone Interface” integrates smartphones via “Apple CarPlay” and “Android Auto”. The “Phone Box” now connects the smartphone to the onboard antenna, thus ensuring an improved reception quality and charging the device inductively or wirelessly according to the Qi standard. What’s more, the sound system from Bang & Olufsen has a new 3D sound and a further improved bass thanks to a second bassbox. The amplifier supplies 19 loudspeakers with a total of 755 watts of power.
Driver assistance systems: The next step towards piloted driving
With up to 30 driver assistance systems, the new Audi A5 Cabrio is widely deployed. An intelligent combination of different technologies increases safety, comfort and efficiency. At the same time, Audi is taking the next step towards piloted driving. The “Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop & Go” system with a traffic jam system, which decelerates and accelerates independently in a toughening traffic up to 65 km / h, and also temporarily assumes steering on well-developed roads. The “Predictive Efficiency Assistant” evaluates GPS information from the near vicinity of the car and helps with targeted fuel savings.
The evasive assistant engages when an obstacle is to be avoided in order to avoid an accident. Using the data from the front camera, ACC and radar sensors, the escape assistant calculates a suitable track in seconds fractional parts. Further assistance systems, such as the turnaround assistant, the parking assistant, the rear-end collision assistance system, which warns when driving backwards ahead of the traffic, the exit warning, the camouflaged traffic sign detection, the Active Lane Assist and the Side Assist from.
Equipment: A real pampering program as standard
The Audi A5 Cabriolet 2017 has a wide range of features. Standard on board are, among other things, Xenon headlights, the driving dynamics system “Audi Drive Select” and partial leather seats. The “MMI Radio plus” provides an intuitive and ergonomic operation with a 7-inch color display (17.8 cm screen diagonal), webbing microphones and the comfort opening of the softtop.
