380 hp in Monster-Yaris
After the competition from Hyundai and Ford recently ventured the veil over their rally cars for the 2017 season, we now know, with which equipment the Toyota troop around the four-time rally world champion Tommi Mäkinen to the start next year . The Yaris WRC is only 4.09 meters long, but looks as if a Formula 1 car had paired with a Transformers figure. Visually, the Toyota is the most extreme WRC car we’ve seen so far. In addition, the small 1.6-liter turbo engine delivers a full 380 hp and 425 Nm of torque. The regulations of the World Rally Championship have been comprehensively revised for the 2017 season and now allow more power and a wilder aerodynamics, which is to be especially beneficial to the fans on the track.
Latvala and Hänninen as drivers
As a driver for the “Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC Team“, the two Finns Juho Hänninen and Jari-Matti Latvala will compete with their respective co-drivers. As replacement and test driver is the freshly baked WRC2 champion Esapekka Lappi, which changes from Skoda to Toyota. Whether a third Yaris WRC will be used for Lappi in the course of the 2017 season is not yet clear. Latvala is said to be a successor to the Finnish-Japanese coalition, but he comes right from reigning world champion VW, who has ended his WRC commitment abruptly after the end of the 2016 season. Latvala can look back on 16 victories and 57 podium placements so far. Even the 2016 World Champions – Sébastien Ogier – took the test in the Yaris WRC, but decided to switch to the Ford Fiesta WRC of the M-Sport team after finishing off at VW.
New sporty top Yaris planned
The WRC commitment is also to pay off for road vehicles for Toyota. Thus, the Japanese plan to launch a sporty version of the Yaris on the market. A first drawing shows a striking color as well as a small roof spoiler. The sport variant is to be the top model of the Yaris range. So far, the strongest Yaris has 99 hp and price 12,990 euros.
