Faraday Future unveils the FF 91
Faraday Future has now unveiled its new model. At a press conference in the style of Apple in the run-up to the electronics trade fair CES (5 to 8 January 2017 in Las Vegas) the head of the Chinese investor named “YT Jia” drove the FF 91 on the stage.
The FF stands for the company name Faraday Future, which means 91 (“nine one” spoken), has not yet been explained. But it is already a series model. The proportions are unusual: At 5.25 meters, the car is as long as the long version of the Mercedes S-Class. The wheelbase is similar, the height of 1.60 meters however larger. The generously glazed passenger cabin reaches far to the front. The doors open in the opposite direction, with a fingertip on a touch button on the outside. Overall, the car looks like a mixture of SUV, Van, upper class sedan and sports car – and it very, very roundish. FF speaks of a UFO look, so some will say: The car looks like a piece of soap.
Electric drive via one or two axles
Faraday’s modular platform (variable platform architecture, VPA) is responsible for the electric drive. As with the Tesla Model S, an all-wheel drive should be optional. The overall performance is amazing at 783 kilowatts or 1,065 hp, over 800 Nm are available. This accelerates the car in 2.44 seconds to 60 miles (almost 100 km / h), a test even 2.39 seconds. This makes the car even faster than the Model S P100D, which accelerates to 100 km / h in 2.5 seconds, and is likely to be among the fastest cars ever.
More than 700 km range
The batteries (from the manufacturer LG Chem, supposedly the largest energy density in the world) store 130 kilowatt hours of electrical energy. This should be enough for a European cycle for more than 700 kilometers – more than the Model S. The car can be loaded according to the FF according to any standard. Charging capacities of up to 200 kilowatts are possible. The loading speed reaches up to 500 miles (800 km) per hour. Even if this is the maximum charging speed – this usually drops towards the end of the process – the battery should be full again after about an hour. The included 240 volt charger charges it in four and a half hours from half full to 100 percent.
The cW value of 0.25 is responsible for the recordable range. The good aerodynamics include the 22-inch rims, which automatically close at higher speeds: no gaps between the spokes mean less air turbulence. The exterior mirrors can be easily detached and then give two backward cameras the view. Your picture is combined with that of the camera in the roof spoiler to form a single monitor. The ground clearance is also automatically adjusted to the speed – obviously the car has an air suspension.
Incredible number of sensors
Despite the great length and the enormous wheelbase, the car should have a good maneuverability. A four-wheel steering and a torque vectoring function. The turning circle, however, seems quite large, if you watch the car as you park autonomously – which can be seen on a video of FF. At the press conference, FF did not go into detail on the autonomous abilities. However, the car has an impressive number of sensors: ten front cameras, 13 radar sensors, twelve ultrasonic sensors and a light detector and ranging. The latter is, surprisingly, arranged in the center of the front hood, and it only exits when required.
Modern lighting technology
FF also drives a lot of high-tech. The windows can be darkened by fingertip on it and the LED lighting is not only to illuminate the street, but also communicate with the environment. It signals the charge state and whether the car is driving autonomously.
Networked like crazy
FF is also proud of connectivity and personalizability: the smartphone serves as access authorization, but also by facial recognition by a camera in the B-column is supposed to open the car. On boarding, seats, air conditioning and audio equipment are then set to the user. His data is also available to him and he can watch the football match at the same point where he stopped at home on the TV. Through artificial intelligence, the car is also gradually becoming better suited to the needs of its user.
Faraday Future FF 91 Price and Production from 2018
So much technology, power and range should have their price. What the car costs, has not yet been communicated, but of a clearly six-digit amount one can go out well. Like the Tesla Model 3 can already reserve a copy – against a deposit of $ 5,000. Serial production is scheduled to begin in 2018.
